How the numbers work

Data

Daily DNS query volume for each TLD from Cloudflare Radar, based on queries seen by Cloudflare's public 1.1.1.1 resolver. It is free, covers years of history and is updated daily.

Index

Radar reports volume relative to a peak, so each TLD is scaled on its own so that its busiest day in the last year equals 100. The charts therefore show each TLD's trend. They do not show which TLD is bigger.

Momentum

The percent change in average daily index over the last N days compared with the N days before. 7D, 30D and 90D use the same formula. When the earlier period averaged under 2 on the index, the result is scaled down proportionally so tiny baselines do not produce absurd percentages.

What it is not

DNS queries measure how often names under a TLD are looked up through one resolver, not registrations or active sites. Traffic can spike because of a single large site, an outage or automated activity.

Known limits

Radar normalizes each response, so a year of history is stitched together from overlapping windows; small seams are possible. The newest day is not published yet and is carried forward from the previous day when missing.
